Cheerful Living Room Ideas
Once the Christmas tree has come down and the decorations have been packed away, your living room can feel a little lackluster in the cold light of a new year's day.
When you spend so much time there, you want your living room to be a light, bright, happy space. So, how can you inject a bit of life and tinsel-free fun back into it for the New Year?
We asked Good Housekeeping homes editor Carolyn Bailey to share her easy mood-boosting tips.

1. Get inspired
Think about the colours, the styles and the images that make you smile. The more you can personalise your room, the more you'll love spending time there. Of her sources of inspiration, Carolyn says: "It's an exciting time in interiors once the Christmas decorations have been cleared away. I check out the colour forecasts, the latest catwalk designs, plus fabric and wallpaper launches. I also look to nature and my travels".
She adds: "I have an eclectic interiors style. I love mixing old with new, neutral with colourful accessories and family heirlooms with new on-trend pieces. I also love a mix of plain colour, texture and pattern".
2. Clear away clutter
"The first thing I would recommend is to have a declutter," Carolyn advises. "Clear away as much as you can - buy some big baskets for heavy throws you won't need when we get to spring and invest in some fun storage solutions, like wooden drawers, that will keep your bits and pieces tidy and look great on display. Then buy new room fragrance and spring-scented candles to freshen the room".
3. Fill the room with your favourite pieces
From your favourite photos and colourful prints, to pretty floral tea sets, having pieces you love around you will immediately make you feel more at home. "I love the huge mugs from the Sainsbury's Home Meadow collection, as I'm a tea addict," says Carolyn. "They're really generous and oversized and I love the pretty colour and pattern – blue is one of my favourite colours."

4. Add cheerful colours
"I'm a big fan of the soft, muted pastel tones for spring/summer – warm, comforting colours from nature like soft greens, bursts of yellow and soft rose pinks are instantly cheering, as are country garden-inspired florals," Carolyn says. "Now is a great time to change up your cushion covers for something lighter and brighter."

She adds: "I always try to arrange things in odd numbers as it's pleasing on the eye. A group of three candles, or five cushions always looks appealing. I would also recommend mixing together fabrics and textures as this adds interest. Layering throws on your sofa and chairs is another clever way to give a room an instant update and make it really comfy and welcoming".
5. Bring the outside in
"If you want an instant mood boost, sprays of wild flowers in small jugs, or a container planted up with succulents can work wonders," says Carolyn.
6. Create an intimate, comfortable space
"My living room is the hub of my home. It's where we all gather, relax, chat, enjoy a coffee together and watch TV. I also love entertaining, so I invite friends over as often as I can," Carolyn says. "I always recommend a comfy sofa and a couple of large armchairs so you can gather with friends and family. My other essentials for a comfortable, welcoming living room are lots of cushions and candlelight".
7. Use scent
Scents are so key to wellbeing. Just introducing a spring floral scent can transport you to spring gardens and summers outdoors. For Carolyn, it instantly lifts the mood. "I light a scented candle each evening which always makes me feel happier and relaxed," she says.
